Nokia to invest $150 M in mobile phone plant

BANGALORE: WorldÂ’s biggest mobile phone maker, Nokia will start a mobile phone handset manufacturing facility in India at an initial investment of $ 150 million, a senior company official said. Sanjay Behl, Nokia India marketing head, said the company would announce details about the location, total investment among others within the next four-six weeks. Behl said the facility would be a large factory and employ 2000 people to produce both GSM and CDMA handsets. "We will start off with a slightly smaller base but very soon it would be scaled up to 2000". He said the company was looking at many locations and will decide on the plant and make an announcement soon. "Currently, we are in dialogue with a lot of State Governments. We are looking for right venue, which has right infrastructure abilities and everything," Behl said. "The decision is four to six weeks away." He said the India facility will not just meet the needs of India but will also make phones for the export market. "Manufacturing is going to move into India very soon. Within a time-frame of about a year or so or may be earlier than that."
