Bangalore: Hardly a day passes without hearing about or reading about a burglary. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, 93742 burglaries were reported in India in the year 2008. Large businesses have security measures and insurance coverage to check this, but what about homes and SMBs? Because of reliability and cost it is not always an option to have watchmen or security guards. Another option is electronic security, which again brings another set of problems. The biggest issues that India face are power outages, weak internet connectivity and dust, which are mostly not served by the present security solutions. Bangalore based Silvan Innovations Lab is trying to solve the same via their surveillance solutions named Brahma, Dhruv and Shiv. The IP based surveillance cameras come equipped with inbuilt backup battery and local data storage, which solves the basic problems of electric outage and low bandwidth. Both Brahma and Dhruv can work on the battery for up to two hours while Shiv, which is a 'sleeping camera' with an passive infrared sensor which helps it to 'wake up' at the sight of somebody, can last anywhere between two hours to ten hours depending on the amount of human activity. The Brahma camera does not require a Network Video Recorder (NVR) or a PC, it can act as an NVR on its own and can be accessed from anywhere through the internet. Since the cameras has inbuilt backup batteries, there is no need for a UPS, this makes the cameras cost effective too which is another advantage in the cost concerned Indian market. With the security in place the company is on the way to make the life style easier through its home automation solution, Smart Home Automation Systems. This system handles visitor management, home safety and home management. The visitor management encompasses a video door bell, using which the owner can see the person who rang the bell on an electronic screen and talk to him without opening the door. The home safety includes features like magnetic door contacts, fire alarm, gas leakage detector, motion detector and a panic button all which comes in handy for home security. And finally the home management, this is the electronic management of various home appliances including kitchen appliances, lights and fans, ACs, curtain motors, sprinkler systems, and more. The system is controlled using a touch screen control panel mounted on a wall in the house which can also be accessed through internet from a laptop or a GPS enabled mobile phone. With the home management system one can switch on the AC, the TV, music system and any other appliances one wants to, to make home comfortable, using the mobile on the way to home. The system can also be customized based on moods. The company with its own-developed technology components is set to deliver intelligent IP-based video surveillance systems and believes this intelligence achieved through embedded analytics will be a significant differentiator. To make a mark in the market, their first step is their new logo. According to the company the concept of the new logo is infinity and the blue color represents technology which together implies 'intelligent technology plus innovation multiplied to the power of infinity'. The company also has plans to provide surveillance as a service in the future which will again help in reducing the initial investment required. Silvan's current focus is on Indian market. The immediate aim is to provide products for homes and SMBs. The company also has plans to start an office in the U.S. in the future. "We are on track to achieve a turnover of 2 crores in 2010-11 and based on the products that we will be delivering to the market in the next quarter; our revenues are expected to touch 12 crores in 2011-12. We are also looking at bringing in investment of the order of 10 crores over the next year to grow our business. And expect to achieve revenues of 50 crores by the year 2014-15" said M. Giridhar Krishna, CEO of Silvan. Silvan presently has a 30 member R&D team and currently is on the process of increasing their employee count. They also have plans to set up sales, marketing and support teams in the NCR, Mumbai and Kolkata. Their client list includes Godrej, On Mobile, Legal Advantage, eroads, VDB and Lisle Technology Partners.
