Nehru Place in The Notorious Markets List

Bangalore: Nehru Place, New Delhi, is one among the Top 30 Notorious Markets of the world reported an official U.S. report based on the Out-of-Cycle Review of Notorious Markets.

The Notorious Markets List highlights the shopping centers that one usually goes to as well as the online shopping sites, which deal with pirated, counterfeit and infringed goods. These markets on the list violate Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) and, hence, are illegal. According to a U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) report, “Nehru Place is reportedly one of the many markets in major cities throughout India that are known for dealing in large volumes of pirated software, pirated optical media containing movies and music and counterfeit goods,” as mentioned in the Financial Express.

As stated in the article, Ron Kirk, U.S. Trade Representative, said, “Piracy and counterfeiting continue to present a serious challenge to the innovation and creativity that is essential to supporting American jobs and creating economic growth around the world. The notorious markets highlighted in this review negatively impact legitimate businesses and industries of all sizes that rely on intellectual property to protect their goods and services.” He also said, “We hope that this review will continue to yield the kind of concrete action from highlighted markets that led to the removal of several markets from the list this year.” Kirk said that this list is not exhaustive and that there are many other countries which deal with pirated goods.

The other countries which appeared on this list are as follows: China, Pakistan, Mexico City, Thailand, Philippines, Ukraine, Russia, Columbia, Argentina, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Paraguay and Ecuador.

To be included in this list makes India realize that intellectual property needs to be guarded in a more stringent manner.
