NRIs urged to participate in 3G Broadband

Chennai: The Satyam Computers Services fraud that has shaken the Indian software services sector will not have any cascading impact on the other players, Communications and IT Minister A. Raja said Friday. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the seventh Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) here, Raja said: "It is unfortunate that such a thing has happened. But it will not affect the investments or other companies. The corporate affairs ministry is thoroughly investigating the case." Earlier, addressing the Non Resident Indians (NRI) from the US, he urged them to participate in India's growing telecom sector where 10 million subscribers are added every year. "The foreign direct investment (FDI) inflow has gone up from $478 million in 2006-07 to $1,261 million in 2007-08." Referring to the government's policy guidelines for 3G Broadband Wireless Access Services, he said the spectrum for both services will be auctioned. "An electronic auction system has been developed and the auction for 3G spectrum will be held soon with the help of an expert agency," Raja added. According to him, Telecom Centres of Excellence are being set up in leading institutions like the Indian Institute of Technology, the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, in public-private partnership mode.
