KOLKATA: NIIT Technologies Ltd, the demerged software unit of NIIT Ltd, would expand its business process outsourcing (BPO) operations by opening new centres in the country and focussing on the US market for sourcing projects. "We are going for expansion of our BPO operations, which is registering faster growth than IT solutions market. We will come up with new centres but the locations are yet to be finalised," NTL CEO Arvind Thakur told PTI. The company, which had launched its BPO operations in 2002 under wholly-owned subsidiary NIIT SmartServe Ltd, had a 650-seat capacity at its only BPO facility in Gurgaon. "We are planning more investment in this sector. We have to open more centres to expand BPO operations," he said. For sourcing of projects, the company has decided to start penetrating the US market. "So far, most of our business was coming from the UK. From this year on, we will start focussing on the US". Productwise, the company would focus on financial services, transportation and retail segments -- same as the focus areas of its IT solutions business, Thakur said. "In the long run, our objective is to combine the two and offer integrated IT and BPO services." However, the $105 million company had no immediate plan to open new centres for software development. "We will rather expand the capacity in existing facilities," he said. NTL currently had 2453 employees and has four development centres in India and two in the US. It also has centres in London, Stuttgart, Bangkok and Singapore.
