Bangalore: Motorola Inc., the global electronics and telecom major, has tied up with the International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore (IIIT-B) to develop wireless broadband solutions for emerging markets like India. According to a company statement Wednesday, as per the agreement signed by the partners, the applied research arm of the $43-billion US firm, Motorola India Research Labs, will jointly work with IIIT-B on projects in specified fields of science and technology, collaborate in developing cutting-edge innovations and solutions and conduct research programmes. "The partnership will enable us to utilise the results of the research efforts aimed at developing innovative wireless broadband solutions for emerging markets like India," Motorola India Research Labs director Chandra Kintala said. The focus of the collaboration will be on innovative solutions related to resource and capacity management, appropriate scheduling policies, and quality of service. Currently, high-end research is being undertaken for providing solutions to improve quality of service over WiMax. "Through a collaborative effort we intend to advance our research and development (R&D) and achieve breakthrough technological innovations with the domain skills and expertise of India's leading technology institute," Kintala said. Motorola India chairman Firdose Vandrevala said the low cost of deployment and high-speed data access made WiMAX one of the leading solutions for wireless broadband services especially in the rural areas. "The tie-up with IIIT-B reinforces our commitment to India's telecom revolution. This alliance builds on our collaboration and partnership with Indian research and academic institutions," Vandrevala pointed out. III-B Director S. Sadagopan said as a primer institute focused on teaching and research, the association with Motorola would give its students exposure to real life technical projects and provide them with the right platform to harness their knowledge and skills. In the past, Motorola had taken up similar R&D initiatives with other leading technology institutions such as IITs in Chennai and Mumbai and the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. The Bangalore-based Motorola Labs India is engaged in research on embedded systems, communication networks and application services, all in the context of mobile voice and data communications and with emphasis on emerging markets. Research projects include increasing capacity and range of WiFi (Wireless Fidility), WiMax and other communication networks, cost-effective broadband connectivity and discovering new nano materials for efficient energy storage. As a deemed university, the IIIT-B, set up by the Karnataka government, works in partnership with the corporate sector and focuses mainly on research, entrepreneurship and innovation. It offers courses leading to masters and doctoral degrees in IT, collaborations with the IT industry in R&D projects and incubates companies to foster entrepreneurship in students.
