Most firms see need for info security policy

NEW DELHI: Eighty six percent respondents to a recently conducted survey have expressed the need for an information security policy, citing sensitivity and vulnerability of information stored in databases. The survey conducted by the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), sought to assess the awareness levels among organizations regarding information security needs and the level of implementation. The survey report titled “ Report on National Security Baseline 2005” revealed that a greater percentage of companies used traditional business acumen to protect their data. According to the survey, 81 percent of the respondent felt that their application system access mechanism was in control and about 79 percent of them monitored it regularly. About 11 percent of them did not have used id password protection to protect the data. The survey also revealed that 100 percent of the respondent used some sort of anti-virus, anti-spam and anti worm software, 85 percent used firewall or ids towards network protection, 67 percent had a system administrator, 64 percent had an email server administrator and 56 percent had a network administrator. Eighty nine percent of the respondents took backups regularly, 70 percent had a business continuity plan in place and 63 percent had a disaster recovery plan in place, the survey said. Seventy three percent of those surveyed had invested in electronic storages for data protection and backups, 87 percent in protecting the operating system, 75 percent in application protection, 67 percent in communication protection and 79 percent in firewall or ids for network protection. Sixty two percent of the respondents considered financial data as a priority for protection and 40 percent considered customer information as being important. The survey covered CEOs and top management of around 100 companies including large and small organizations.
