Mobile number portability to be launched Nov 1

Mumbai: Communications and IT Minister A. Raja Tuesday said that the much awaited mobile number portability (MNP), which allows telecom subscribers to sustain their numbers while switching operators, will be implemented partially from Nov 1. "MNP will be in operation partially on Nov 1... We wanted to inaugurate it in Haryana first," Raja said on the sidelines of an event organised by state-owned operator BSNL. The implementation of MNP has been delayed four times. Initially, it was to be implemented by Dec 31, 2009 in all the metros along with the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The deadline was changed to March 31, 2010 and then to June 30. The June 30 deadline was again deferred as operators were not ready with the infrastructure to provide the service. Raja also said that the ministry was hopeful about a decision on Blackberry by Oct 31. The home ministry will decide if the deadline would be extended for Canadian company Research In Motion (RIM) to hand over the encryption keys and codes of its mails and messaging services to the Indian security establishment. Asked if the government will extend the deadline for RIM, Raja said: "We wanted to close it... if necessary it (extension) will be considered by the home ministry."
