Mobile Industry records high growth

NEW DELHI: Revenues from mobile operators surpassed the fixed line services for the first time as the Indian telecom sector registered a growth of 30 percent in revenues at $19.9 million in 2005-06. BSNL emerged the winner in this race where private players contributed an 85 per cent growth, with revenues ringing up to $8.97 billion and a growth rate of 9 percent Bharti and Reliance came in a respectable second and third, recording revenues of $2.65 billion with a growth rate of 49 per cent and $2.55 billion at a rate of 109 percent respectively. Service industry growth was mainly due to the Terming the surge in the revenues of cellular services at 57 percent, which though less than the 63 per cent growth of FY 2004-05, was responsible enough to take the revenues to beyond that of fixed services not to forget the expansion of networks in new areas, consolidations, and the operators offering personalized tariff structures. Stating that the industry added 38.5 million users with Bharti Airtel emerging the top services provider with Tata Teleservices and MTNL as star performers. The fixed services industry grew at 3 percent to cross the 50 million subscribers mark in 2005-06, which is expected to grow further with newly introduced IPTV and broadband services.
