New Delhi: Meghalaya Chief Minister D.D. Lapang Wednesday said he was not surprised that his state was given the status of the "focus state" in the Indian International Trade Fair (IITF) in the capital. In his inaugural address at the trade fair, Lapang said if the tea and oil industries are not taken into account, his state attracts the maximum investment in the northeast. "Because of our investment friendly policy and overall support from the government, Meghalaya attracts the maximum number of investments in all industries in the northeast. This is, of course, after keeping aside the tea and the oil industry," Lapang said. Talking about the state's achievements in the field of tourism, power generation, agriculture, horticulture and overall industrial development, Lapang said: "It is of little wonder that Meghalaya is given the status of the focus state in the trade fair." "Apart from other minerals, we have enormous reserves of coal and limestone, which have already attracted big business houses, both national and international, to kick start cement, steel and thermal power plants," he said. Promising to give the people a taste of the various flavours of the state, its culture, food and tradition, Lapang said that in order to experience this, one needs to visit the state. "The salubrious climate and the awe inspiring topography of the state provides for an ideal destination. Tourism thus is going to be our mainstay in the future," he said. Lapang stressed that Meghalaya is projected as the focus state in order to welcome investors to exploit the potential of the state. "This will not only benefit the state but also return attractive dividends," he added.
