Maruti domestic sales at all time high

New Delhi: Compact model Alto led the highest ever domestic monthly sales by car market leader Maruti Udyog Limited, which sold a total of 45,300 vehicles in January, a growth of 1.6 percent over the corresponding month last year. "Maruti sold 45,300 units in the domestic market. This is Maruti's highest-ever monthly domestic sales," the company said in a statement Tuesday. The total sales for the month including the 3,244 units exported was 48,544 units, which was however a dip of 1.2 percent due to a 32.9 percent drop in exports, the company said. Led by Alto, Maruti's volume in the domestic A2 (compact) segment grew by 21 percent and in the A3 (mid-size) segment by 140 percent during the month compared to sales in the corresponding month last year. Alto alone witnessed the highest ever sales in January with 13,117 units being sold. In the case of the entry level M800 there was however a 37 percent drop with 9,625 units being sold compared to 15,301 units being sold in the corresponding month last year. In the compact segment there was also good demand for Wagon-R and Zen, while in the mid-size segment the Baleno and Esteem witnessed a high growth of 139.7 percent with sales of 3,222 units compared to 1,344 units in January last year. In the multi-utility vehicle segment the Gypsy and Vitara witnessed 189.5 percent growth with total sales of 443 units.
