KOCHI: An IT-enabled services habitat centre, first of its kind in the country, would be inaugurated on May 2. The habitat centre set up by the Kerala State Information Technology Mission (KSITM) was equipped with modern facilities required to impart specialised ITES training, including voice and accent training for call centres and domain-specific orientation for the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry, a release from KSITM said. Training in computers and personality development would also be offered by the centre. The country's strengths in the form of low staff costs, a large pool of skilled persons, English speaking workforce, conducive policy environment and government support had made India a popular choice for customers seeking outsourced services, it said. The ITES was the silver lining in the dark clouds of the Indian IT marketplace during the turbulent year of 2001 as it posted a growth of 73 percent, from a turnover of Rs 4100 crore in 1999-2000, to nearly Rs 7100 crore in 2001-02, it said. The ITES sector currently employs around 107,000 personnel and according to a Nascom-McKinsey study, the ITES segment would generate job opportunities for over 1.1 million Indians and a revenue potential of Rs 81,000 crore, the release added.
