BHUBANESWAR: Internet services through cable in Orissa have become cheaper with the state's only service provider announcing a cut in the cost of equipment like modems. Ortel Communication Ltd, which also provides Internet services through dial up, has made its service through cable cheaper, said B.P. Rath, vice president of the company. The cable Internet service is provided via the data over cable system interface standard 2.0 modem, which cost 20,000 three years ago. This has now come down to 3,000, Rath told IANS. The modem allows upstream capacity per channel up to three times greater than in earlier systems, with rates of 30.72 mbps per channel. With this modem, operators can offer more cost effective symmetric services such as peer-to-peer networking, IP telephony, video conferencing and online gaming. Ortel Communications provides its services to the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. The company is also building a state-of-the-art hybrid fibre coaxial network capable of providing a gamut of telecom and broadcast services. The firm was the first private sector company in India to be granted an Internet Service Provider license by the government in November 1998. It produces and cablecasts a local TV channel under the brand name OTV, which has the distinction of being one of the earliest Indian channels and only streaming video provider in Orissa.
