CHENNAI: Chip major Intel has zeroed in on the southern metro Chennai to establish a microchip manufacturing facility with an investment tag of Rs 200 crore. The Chennai plant is expected to act as a manufacturing base to meet the growing demand in the south Asian market. The company already has a plant in Malaysia. Intel has identified 50 to 70 acres of land close to the site allotted to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) at the Siruseri IT Park, promoted by the state-owned State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (Sipcot), on the IT highway. Earlier, it had looked at a couple of other sites, including one in the Mahindra Industrial Park (MIPL). Senior officials from Intel, including some from its Bangalore base, have visited Chennai more than once for interactions with those managing the industrial promotion agencies over the last six to 9 months. “Intel has finalised its plans for the Chennai plant over the last fortnight and is expected to sign an agreement within the next few weeks,” official sources told ET. According to them, Intel was initially looking for about 80 to 85 acres of land. After talks reached the “final stages”, the company invited an official team from Tamil Nadu to visit its microchip plant in Malaysia to appreciate Intel’s plans for Chennai. However, the official team, which was to leave for Malaysia on May 18, could not make it due to some hitches in “visa processing”. “Nevertheless, Intel has finalised its plans and has asked Sipcot to reserve the land identified by the company,” the sources added.
