Intel set to expand base in Kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: IT major Intel Corporation is all set to begin operations in Kerala and is likely to choose between Kochi and this state capital as its base. The company would soon decide between the two cities, said head of sales of Intel's South Asia operations G.B. Kumar, who has been having detailed discussions with top IT officials in the state. There were indications that the Infopark in Kochi, which is nearing completion, might be the final choice because of its infrastructure facilities. Apart from expanding their hardware operations in Kerala, currently looked after by dealers, Intel expects to play a major role in helping the government in its initiatives to make the state IT savvy. These include steps like e-governance and e-education. Also planned are free consultancies to small and medium scale industries. Moreover, Intel is planning to set up computer laboratories in schools, prepare textbooks, provide training to teachers and prepare databases to help in the smooth functioning of the educational institutions. Intel had a role in the Akshaya Project, a novel IT project through which one member of each family in Malappuram district became e-literate. The Kerala government is all set to replicate the Malappuram model in all the other 13 districts of the state. The project is expected to start in July.
