BANGALORE: According to a report, Intel Corp. has urged the Indian government for tax concessions and free access to external commercial loans for its proposed wafer testing facility in the country. The report also informed that Intel is planning to build a $700 million facility in four phases, either in Noida near New Delhi or Chennai in southern India. Disclosing unnamed officials in the country's finance ministry, it said the first phase would entail an investment of $250 million while three phases of $150 million each were planned for later. An official said "Some of the benefits sought by Intel are available in special economic zones. But we can't agree to all the sops it has asked for as it will not be fair to other companies." As per a source, Intel will announce the setting up of the facility in India only after the government agrees to give it the concessions it seeks. It is quite normal for large chip manufacturers to press for concessions, effectively conducting an auction between competing sites for their plants, which can bring employment together with economic and technological stimulus.
