India's economic growth to rev up computer market
NEW DELHI: "Although not impacted as severely as other countries, India has had its share of worries because of the global economic slowdown," said the study report "India: PC Market Outlook 2003" released here Monday.
"Recent positive trends indicate that organisations are easing restrictions on IT budgets. This will result in increased PC uptake in the corporate segment," it added.
The report said PC shipments in the current year would increase 18 percent, up from the 12 percent growth logged last year.
"With a population to rival China, India has a lot to offer in terms of demand but a low GDP (gross domestic product) per capita means that margins will be tight," said Vinod Nair, research analyst with Gartner India.
"Although the forecast is for strong volume growth in 2003, the margins will be stretched," he added.
The study said the demand for laptops would grow significantly in the current year, as the technology gap between them and desktop PCs narrows and prices continue to fall.
