India's Feb industrial output up 4.9 percent

NEW DELHI:India's industrial output rose 4.9 percent in the 12 months to February, lower than the previous month's 7.5 percent mainly due to slower growth in mining and electricity sectors, data showed on Tuesday. The latest Index for Industrial Production (IIP) put the growth in April-February 2004-05 to 8.1 percent as against 6.9 percent in the same period of previous fiscal. In February 2005, the mining sector showed a negative growth of 2.3 percent as compared to a robust growth of 10.7 percent in the same month of 2004. Manufacturing production, representing more than 75 percent of industrial output, rose 6.2 percent in February, lower than January's 9.3 percent, data from the Central Statistical Organization showed. Production of consumer goods, such as soap and televisions, was 11.2 percent higher in February than a year earlier, down from the previous month's 15.1 percent. A strong manufacturing sector pushed economic growth to 8.5 percent in the fiscal year to March 2004, the strongest expansion in nearly 15 years. While electricity sector showed a negative growth of 0.9 percent in February 05 as against 12.9 percent growth in the same month of 04, the manufacturing growth slowed down to 6.2 percent from 7.6 percent last year. Electricity sector also grew 5.3 percent in April-February 2004-05 as compared to 4.5 percent in the same period last fiscal. Consumer goods, however, grew 11.2 percent in February as against 3.0 percent last year.
