NEW DELHI: Indian private carriers offering mobile services based on Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology said on Friday 277,505 new users signed up for their services in the past month, raising the total customer base to 8.35 million. Data released by the Association of Unified Telecom Services Providers, which represents five operators, showed their mobile user base grew three per cent in July compared with the previous month. The number does not include mobile customers who use CDMA-based services offered by state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. Both companies do not release their customer base or new additions. Reliance Infocomm Ltd, partly owned by petrochemical giant Reliance Industries Ltd, accounted for a bulk of the new additions. The firm, which has a nationwide mobile footprint, recorded 266,120 new customers. Other players offering CDMA-based services include Tata Teleservices Ltd and Shyam Telelink Ltd. These carriers compete with rival companies such as Bharti Tele-Ventures Ltd, which offer wireless services based on the Global System for Mobile (GSM)communication platform. Indian carriers offer some of the cheapest call rates in the world to more than 38.6 million users who are forecast to cross at least 100 million by 2005.
