Washington: A former Indian-American student of a U.S. university in New Jersey now faces more serious charge in a webcam spying case that resulted in the suicide of his roommate.
As a result, Dharun Ravi, 19, might end up spending more time in prison than earlier believed.
The trial of Ravi, who earlier turned down a plea deal, is scheduled to begin February 21.
A former student of the Rutgers University, Ravi is accused of using a webcam to spy over his roommate''s intimate encounter with another man in September 2010.
His roommate Tyler Clementi committed suicide a few days later.
In a 15-count indictment before a New Jersey court, the crime was earlier listed as a third-degree charge, but federal prosecutors on Wednesday told the court this was a mistake and that Ravi now faces a charge of second degree crime.

It is very unfortunate that Politicians and main stream Media with unethical double standards are selling this tragic suicide by a young talented violinist as Bias Crime and an act of hatred towards homosexuals. It is an open secret that homosexuality has become mainstream in America. Every show on prime time TV promotes homosexuality with famous people glorifying it. That gives a sense of pride to every gay in America rather around the world for being gay.
With due respect and all the forgiveness from the family painfully I have to say that any person who commits suicide most of the time they are mentally unstable. Considering Tyler committed suicide it is also possible despite homosexuality being promoted on mainstream media by celebrities, he was still struggling with his homosexuality. If I may quote not too long ago homosexuality was classified as mental disorder. That increases the probability of this young man suffering from mental illness quite likely.
Tyler’s suicide is not a case of bullying and certainly this is not a hate crime. This was a stupid prank pulled by Ravi and Molly on a mentally unstable young man who chose to take his own life on being exposed that he is gay. As I wrote earlier on other news paper sites however it is necessary to apply brains before pulling a prank because each student is different on how they react. Ravi and Molly should have known Tyler enough to realize the level of embarrassment it would cause. I do not think they knew that Tyler would take extreme step of committing suicide. The news reports do not indicate if Tyler's parents were aware of his sexual orientation. Ravi and Molly who may be indirectly responsible for the tragic suicide by Tyler must be punished to the maximum extent of the invasions of privacy laws.
Those in the authorities including politicians and individuals who wants Ravi to be punished for hate crime and responsible for Tyler’s suicide are going too far. It is still a case of invasion of privacy in this age of facebook and live video streaming of each and everything around us. How much privacy we can expect and how much invasion of privacy we can tolerate, that is the issue we would have to deal with for a better future. Let there be public debate on these issues to honor a young and brilliant life of Tyler Clementi lost to violation of his privacy.
