India to join hands with global groups for monsoon forecast

New Delhi: In a bid to provide accurate monsoon predictions, India will collaborate with international organizations to develop a single weather forecast system, according to officials. "We will be working with international organizations like World Meteorological Organisation and others to develop a forecast system where all the organisations assess the weather situation and based on their output a single forecast for monsoon is made," said Ministry of Earth Sciences Secretary Shailesh Nayak. The ministry Tuesday celebrated its foundation day and speaking on the occasion, Minister of State for Earth Sciences Prithviraj Chavan said a lot of work has been done in the field of weather prediction. "The monsoon rainfall is directly related to agriculture in the country. Lot of money has been spent on modernisation of India Meteorological Department," said Chavan. The minister also gave away the First National Award for Ocean Sciences and Technology to renowned scientist S. Krishnaswami.
