MUMBAI: India will fall short of its targeted three million broadband subscribers by year end by a good two million subscribers. According to the Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI), the industry association which tracks these figures, there were 0.5 million broadband subscribers in the country as on August 31, 2005. The figure represents 18 percent growth, much higher than India's rapid mobile subscriber growth. The government in its Broadband Policy released last year had said it plans to have broadband subscriber base of three million by the year end, but numbers indicate this number can reach only one million. For the broadband subscriber base to reach one million by year end, over 100,000 new customers will have to be added every month, starting September which is an ambitious target cmparing the high cost of internet and computers. However early trends show broadband, and not dial-up, will be the growth area going ahead. Currently, 90 percent of the internet subscribers use dial-up connections.
