NEW DELHI: India will work to forge a mechanism of consultation and cooperation with China in their joint quest for energy security, Petroleum Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar said. "We are working toward an Asian energy commitment on the lines of the European alliance on coal and steel," he said. The minister will visit China later this year at the invitation of Zhang Xiaoqiang, vice chairman of China's National Development and Reform Commission. Aiyar said he favored talks between the petroleum and external affairs ministries to chalk out areas of cooperation between the energy deficient countries, which are working together in Sudan in an exploration block and are likely to do so in Russia. India and China are eyeing opportunities to acquire the assets of troubled Russian crude producer Yukos, which was sold after it failed to clear tax dues.
