Bangalore: India has achieved a major milestone this year as it has been a year without any case of wild polio being recorded in the country. Two years ago the country was recorded to have the largest number of polio cases in the world – 741 and today the nation has reached a milestone in the history of polio eradication.

Polio (poliomyelitis) is a highly infectious viral disease which mainly affects young children. The virus generally is transmitted through contaminated food, water and multiplies in the intestine, from where it can invade the nervous system. Even those who do not show any symptom can spread the virus through excreta. Polio is a disabling condition where there is an absence of muscle tone in one or both limbs, and tendon reflexes. While it is said that no cure exists for the virus, the oral polio vaccine prevents the transmission of the infection effectively.

The last case of polio was recorded in January 13 last year, from Kolkata, West Bengal. Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, the hotspots for the endemic virus too have recorded a constant drop in the polio cases from 2008, with no case being recorded in the two states in the past year.
