Bangalore: The science and technology ministry and PanIIT, a global IIT alumni forum are joining hands to work on rural development projects and development of science and technology in the country. The global meet of the IIT alumni is scheduled to take place from December 23-25 in IIT Bombay. Nearly 5000 alumni are coming together for this years’ event. In view of the efforts of the ex-IITians to give back to the country, the government has set aside 50 crore for various projects. “We also plan to help International Training Institutes with their technological training,” said Ashank Desai in his capacity as the head of PanIIT committee. Desai, also the chairman of Mastek, further noted that the Planning Commission has come up with a proposal to set up 22 IIITs, and PanIIT will take on an advisory role in the setting up of the institutes. Among the initiatives planned by the alumni body are PanIIT Future of Computing Initiative (PiFOCI) and PanIIT Foundation for Rural Transformation (PiFort). The forum holds various conferences across the world to highlight issues and generate funds for its various initiates. The head honchos of many corporate firms are slated to attend the event, and their coming together will mean a possible bridge to close the divide between technology and the rural sector. Quite a few successful entrepreneurs have been invited to be part of the conference. This is primarily for a ‘gurukul’ session, wherein other successful counterparts and venture capitalists will mentor around 300 bidding entrepreneurs.
