IIM-A faces faculty crunch, even after salary hike
Ahmedabad: IIM-A is still facing the problem of faculty crunch, even though a rise in salaries by 60 percent. Having a student-teacher ratio of 10:1 at present, the institute is trying to bridge the deficit that is 15 percent as of now. About 8-9 faculty members are leaving the campus every year, reports Parag Dave of the Economics Times. About 30 faculty members have been recruited by the institution in the last two-and-a-half years. Currently there are 94 faculty members in the institute, while the actual need is of 110, said Prof Samir Barua, Director of IIM-A. Although the salaries rose by about 60 percent after the of the Sixth Pay Commission, the faculty salaries paid at private B-schools in the country are about two times more than those being offered at IIM-A , Barua added. During the last three years, the number of students in PGP and PGPX courses has also increased by 54%. According to Barua, The implementation of the Pay Commission has also dented the IIMA corpus which stood at 51 crore. As the institute also had to pay their arrears with effect from 2006, as per the recommendations of the Pay Commission, it severely affected the institute's corpus that stood around 44 crore. IIM-A also significantly increased fees of their courses in 2008 to deal with the problem. Fees for the two-year Post-graduate Programme for management (PGP) were increased from 4 lakh to 11.50 lakh. The institute currently has about 300 pensioners. For the year, 2009-10, IIM-A's revenue stood at 107 crore. This year, IIM-A has increased fees of its PGP course by 9 percent.
