IIIT-H's team Mission Gaganyaan wins CanSat 2010

Bangalore: The team from International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-H) - Mission Gaganyaan took the first place at the CanSat-2010 held at Amarillo, Texas beating 13 other university teams. This was the only team from India to participate at this event organized by American Astronautical Society, with support from NASA.
CanSat allows student teams, from colleges and universities around the world, to design, build and fly, according to the criteria spelled out the organizing committee, an aerospace system called CanSat. The team comprising of eight undergraduate students from electronics and communications engineering were working for last six months on various aspects of design, fabrication, and testing of IIIT-H's version of CanSat. The team was guided by Prof. KS Rajan of the Lab for Spatial Informatics at IIIT-H.
This year's CanSat mission had been quite a challenging one as it required participants to fabricate a micro-satellite to carry one large raw egg of a hen intact, for the entire duration of the flight - from launch to landing and the descent had to be done without the use of Parachutes. The rockets dropped the CanSat at a height of 1500 feet. During the flight and descent, data shall be transmitted once every five seconds to a Ground Control station. The CanSat must land without damaging the egg.
The team has worked on all the components in the design of the system - sensors, communication, body design, descent mechanisms, and ground control station. This team had been much appreciated for its robust design and innovative approach during the Preliminary Design Review (PDR), Hardware Review, and Critical Design Review (CDR), which are the earlier stages of the CanSat competition.
