Hydropower to get boost in 11th plan

NEW DELHI: After concentrating more on agriculture and industrial development during the previous five year plans, the Government will give a boost for the development of Hydroelectric power in the 11th five year plan beginning 2007. The Government was infusing more money and extensive planning was underway to augment hydroelectric generation capacity. The investment would be brought in from the private sector too to achieve the targets, sources said. With an installed production capacity of 22,083 MW at the turn of the century, India is ranked eighth among countries that generate most of its power requirements from water.
