Hindustan Zinc planning 
36 bn expansion

Ahmedabad: Hindustan Zinc (HZL), a subsidiary of Sterlite Industries, Thursday announced its 
36 billion ($900 million) expansion projects, which, according to the company, would make it the world's largest zinc-lead producer by 2010.
An official statement by the company said after the expansion, HZL's total zinc-lead capacity would be 1,065,000 tonnes per annum with fully integrated mining and captive power generation capacities. The plans involve expansion of two brownfield smelter projects, which will increase the production capacities of zinc and lead by 210,000 tonnes and 100,000 tonnes respectively.
The 160 MW captive power plant and the Rampura Agucha mine expansion will be completed by mid-2010. The projects at the Sindesar Khurd and Kayar mines will be completed in phases by early 2012.
HZL has also plans to increase its silver production from the current levels of 100-120 tonnes per year to 500 tonnes per year in the form of silver and silver bearing residue.
To support the increased smelting capacities, HZL will expand its ore production at the Rampura Agucha mine from 5 million tonnes to 6 million tones a year.
