Bangalore: National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) introduced various schemes  to reduce the infant mortality rate (IMR) and the maternal mortality rate (MMR). The public health department of the state is in charge of the schemes which come under NHRM.

The schemes introduced by Central government, Janani-Shishu Karyakram (JSSK) and mother and child tracking system (MCTS) which are implemented under NHRM have proved helpful for both mother and child. The schemes provide various facilities, free of cost.

The JSSK scheme is highly advantageous as it allows free delivery including caesarean and treatment to every expectant mother up to 42 days after delivery and also provides free treatment to baby for 30 days. The scheme includes mother and child from all categories and is not restricted to any particular class or caste. It provides free treatment, medicines, diagnosis, food and free pick up and drop facilities to both rural and urban women.

MCTS is a comparatively old scheme which has acquired popularity recently. It covers the mother for 42 days and child for 30 days, from the day she reports for registration of pregnancy. Computerized records of every mother and child are updated daily under this scheme. The scheme is currently restricted to rural areas which will soon be extended to urban areas as well.
