HCL Info tops in desktop PC sales

NEW DELHI: HCL Infosystems has emerged as the new market leader in the desktop PC segment for the year 2004. According to an recent IDC report, HCL Infosystems leads the market with a market share of 13.7 per cent, up from 9.2 percent in 2003. HCL's market share has increased from to 10.6 percent to 16.6 percent in the fourth quarter of 2004, a growth of 103 percent, a company press release said. HP and IBM India at second and third spots saw their annual desktop sales rise just a shade over 73 percent and 50 percent respectively. While HCL cornered a 13.7 percent market-share, HP and IBM garnered 11.9 percent and 6.2 percent respectively. The national desktop space comprises commercial and consumer categories, with the commercial PC market making up some 67 percent of the total desktop pie. However, the smaller consumer PC market (Home and SoHO segment), grew faster than the commercial desktop market in ‘04 compared to the previous year, ‘03. Annual desktop sales in the consumer category rose 34 percent while PC sales in the commercial category, primarily at the enterprise level, was a shade above 25 percent. Not surprisingly, HCL, HP and IBM retained the top three positions in both the commercial and consumer PC segments in year ’04. While HP’s notched up the highest annual growth levels in the commercial PC market at 60.71 percent, HCL edged out HP in terms of market-share, cornering 14.17 percent of the commercial PC space to HP’s 11.61 percent.
