India's state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has signed an agreement with global aviation major Eurocopter for the joint development of helicopters and components.

NEW DELHI: Defence Minister George Fernandes Thursday said HAL and Eurocopter had signed a memorandum of understanding on June 17 during the Paris Air Show. "The objective of this agreement is to develop cooperative relations in the fields of helicopters, related parts, manufacturing of sub-assemblies and assemblies (and) development of systems and equipment," Fernandes said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha. HAL has also signed an agreement with Israel Aircraft Industries for marketing its advanced light helicopter across the world. Fernandes also said the defence ministry was considering a proposal to replace the army aviation's existing fleet of Cheetah and Chetak helicopters, which are based on the French Alouette design of the 1960s.
