Bangalore: After the acquisition of On2 Technologies, Google will lead to the open sourcing of VP8 which is in competition to H.264 codec. VP8, might become the dominant web video standard, reports Randall Benett of Business Insider. At the same time, Mozilla and Google Chrome are expected to announce support for HTML5 video playback using the new open codec. This step will now enable videos to interact better on the web and can be tacked better than before. Since content creators and media companies will try to experiment on making video an integrated part of the web, it can be used as a monetizing tool. Open browser vendors are in favour of the format and Adobe claims that they can support any other browser through which developers can experiment with the new online video, that can be seen and used by others. Microsoft, though will not provide VP8 support out of the box but the users can install the software, if they wish to avail the services. VP8 is not a convenient option either as the content creators will have to create separate versions of videos for the web and mobile devices and this might make the acceptance and adoption of the codec quite vague. There is hardly any support for VP8 in the mobile devices by Apple which has huge investments in a competing technology H.264. Approximately, two third of the videos on Apple devices are available in H.264 format Mozilla will support the move to open source VP8 and it doesn't come with any licensing issues and YouTube would have an alternative to H.264 as it would announce support it for VP8 along with HTML5. Now, we have to wait and watch, how users adopt and adapt the VP8.
