NEW DELHI: A conference on the textile industry in Asia began here Monday with global and domestic experts due to formulate growth strategies, analyse new trends and discuss how to turn India into a global sourcing hub. The two-day event has been organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). Federico Guicciardini, deputy director of the World Intellectual Property Organisation, and Chiedu Osakwe, director of the textile division of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), are among the key speakers at the meet. Of the Asian countries, India, China, Pakistan, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Vietnam are major players competing in the same markets overseas. Besides being a major textile player, India is seeking to double its apparel industry from $15 billion to $30 billion by 2010. To achieve this, the Indian industry is shifting focus both in the domestic and export markets. "The meet will analyse the factors that will influence the growth of the apparel industry in India," a CII official said. On the technology front, major global textile manufacturers will shed light on the new generation fibres set to take over. While cotton has been India's major strength, over the years synthetics and man-made fibres have also started making inroads into domestic markets. Spencer Kimball, managing director of Belgium based Louis Dreyfus Cotton International, will Tuesday talk of trends in cotton and projected demand. The conference is expected to help the Indian industry position itself better as a global textiles sourcing hub. Already several global companies are sourcing a range of products from India -- from apparel to bed linen and home furnishings.
