German firm Neofonie launches WePad to battle iPad

Bangalore: German IT company Neofonie's is launching a new tablet called 'WePad' to compete with Apple's iPad. This touchscreen tablet looks similar to Apple's iPad but is based around Google's open Android operating system. The WePad will go on sale April 27, 2010 and cost either $611 or $774 depending on the model. Just like iPad there will be one with and one without built-in 3G with the 3G model coming in as the higher priced of the two. WePad will include an 11.6 inch 1366 x 768 multitouch capable display, a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 Pineview-M processor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, two USB 2.0 ports, and a lithium ion battery that is said to be able to offer up to 6 hours of run time, according to TFTS. Other features include a memory card reader, audio output, accelerometer, ambient light sensor, stereo speakers and Flash and Adobe AIR support. In terms of model there is an option of either the Wi-Fi only model with 16GB of internal storage, or 3G equipped model that will also come with GPS and 32GB of internal storage. It also comes with Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator for 1080p video playback. However, the company claims that this tablet will only be available in Germany. Future global launch plans are still not revealed.
