Gen Y employees more green conscious
Bangalore: Generation Y, which constitutes the young, educated, mobile and tech savvy population want their workplace to be urban, flexible, collaborative, modern, creative and sensitive to the environment. They want an office and a work culture that's an extension of their personal life, reports Leslie Guevarra from Greenbiz.com. Generation Y responds quite strongly on environmental issues. In a survey, 96 percent of the youth want an environmentally friendly workplace and 57 percent said that they want their employers to perform above regulatory compliance. Nearly 70 percent of the Generation Y want their workplace to have recycle bins, around 47 percent want water saving fixtures and devices. According to a report, the Generation Y prefers an environmentally focused workplace. Nearly 53 percent said stand-by modes or devices are musts for all electrical equipment, 72 percent said office printers should be shared and 47 per cent said solar panels should be on site. The report recommended that employers should go beyond minimum environmental compliance, provide ample evidence of green solutions in the workplace and embrace green policies in day-to-day operations as well as through initiatives. For instance, the Generation Y desire for their own desks that they can decorate with personal belongings. Generation Y is quite contradictory. They think like entrepreneurs and value relationships, are tech savvy and creative and at the same time environmentally conscious and mobile. They will in the future place a high premium on job security and they apparently currently job-hop. They are value driven and money minded.
