Gen8 Servers by HP cut Data Centre Costs

Bangalore: Hewlett-Packard a technology company on Monday unveiled the next generation Gen8 servers, which is a comprehensive combination of new technologies that are designed to slash the power and overall maintenance costs in data centers while maintaining high server uptimes.

The company assures that these Gen8 servers have the potential to perform better per watt and reduce the manual labour involved in updating servers by incorporating new hardware and software technology. The servers have unique features such as automatic updating and server load-balancing that will help save millions of dollars over a three-year span said HP.

The servers are capable of balancing restricted space and offer more processing power in data centres, while cutting down the power costs. These servers are designed including super cool technologies that are the outcome of a two year, $300 million research program code titled ‘Project Voyager’ wherein HP figured out ways to automate data-centre tasks and bring down the costs. This project surprisingly resulted in more than 900 patents being filed said the company.

The company also has another project which is in process to deal with the server architecture called Project Moonshot, in which the servers are being tied with Calxeda chips based on ARM processors to bring efficiency, performance and power to cloud-related workloads.

The Gen8 servers are expected to be available in March. The servers are powered by services that are able to track power usage per rack and servers. Thermal discovery is a service that provides efficient airflow to cool servers. The new technologies can bring annual energy savings of up to $640,000 over a span of three years and also save a month’s administration time of per person every year, in a 10,000-square-foot data center.

The servers are optimized for specific workloads such as databases, cloud and virtualization and support up to 50 percent more internal storage drives per server compared to previous generations.
