Employees' skill will be outdated in 5 years
Bangalore: The demand of the competitive job market has cautioned employees on their skills, with majority of them believing that their current skills would be outdated within next five years. As per a survey, there is a unanimous agreement among employees that the training currently provided by their employers will not suffice to meet their future career needs. The survey, conducted by global workforce solution provider Kelly Services, pinpointed that, 90 percent of Gen Y (18-29) and Gen X (30-47) believed that within the next five years their skills will need to be upgraded to keep pace with changes in workplace. Sixty-nine percent of the respondents were of the view that training should be the joint responsibility of an employer and employee. The preference of those surveyed is for, on-the-job training (52 percent), followed by professional development courses (33 percent), self-initiated learning (13 percent) and formal or college education qualification. "It is only very recently that we faced skills shortages across many industries, and unless skills and training are enhanced such situation may occur in future. Increased competition for jobs combined with technological change makes it vital that employees are assisted to become even more productive, through the best training possible", said Dhrirent Shantilal, Senior Vice President, Asia Pacific, Kelly Services.
