Department of IT to get 2652 Crore

Mumbai: Amidst of economic crisis, the government of India has decided to increase the budget support for Department of IT and it would now receive around 2652 crore in the central plan outlay. Presenting the interim budget in the lok sabha, Minister of External affairs Pranab Mukherjee said, "with a view to maintain the fiscal tempo to address the economic slowdown and meet the requirements of infrastructure development, budgetary support for Department of IT would be increased compared to the last year." External Affairs Minister also appreciated 'Project Arrow' initiative started by Department of post to provide new technology-enabled service to the common man and said initiatives like this would receive complete support from the government. According to Mukherjee 'Project Arrow' will enhance the services offered to masses and would also lay the foundation for a vibrant delivery mechanism for many social sector schemes such as pension and National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS). Appreciating the government's acceptance of IT as a facilitator of progress, IT body Nasscom opined, "To drive economic activity the Government needs to expedite spending of these allocated funds, particularly for IT projects, to stimulate the domestic market."
