Chennai: The largest computer manufactures of the world, Dell began their Chennai operations as Chief Minister M Karunanidhi unveiled the architectural model of the company’s first manufacturing facility in India. The 280 crore facility will come up at Sriperumpudur in the suburbs of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. This would be the computer major’s eighth facility globally and third in Asia Pacific. The commercial production would begin in the first half of 2007 and would manufacture four lakh computers every year informed Steve Felice, President, Dell, Asia Pacific and Japan. Attacking the domestic market first, the unit will start with the production of desktop computers for the first five years after which the initial investment of $30 million would go up. The facility is expected to cut down the delivery time by at least a third and hence slash the prices too. The company would sell its computers online, after a consumer orders a PC of any configuration. It would be assembled in the Sriperumbudur facility and delivered across the country. India is emerging as the fastest growth maker for Dell globally and the PC makers are to be joined by several other component suppliers of the company in India, promising a collective employment of over 5,000 persons.Dell’s current turn over in India is about 1,800 crore – 70 percent resulting from sale of desktop.
