Delhi to host first India-EU science meet

New Delhi: Thirty-seven delegates from 20 European Union countries including seven science ministers would participate in the first EU-India ministerial meeting on science n New Delhi. "This is the first time that European Union countries are holding science conference outside the continent. The two-day conference would deliberate on areas like innovations and joint research besides motivating students to take up science as a career," Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal told reporters Monday. The minister said that at the end of the conference, there would be a minister-level joint declaration on science and technology cooperation between the two partners. They would also sign an expression of interest on the Facility for Anti-Proton Ion Reactor (FAIR) project. "The $80 billion project would be signed by 12 countries including India. Germany would be funding 75 percent of the project," he said. The programme would also facilitate an interaction with nearly 600 students from Delhi and another 400 science research scholars from across the country. Participants of the conference include ministers from Germany, Slovenia, Portugal, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Poland as well as secretaries from France, Sweden, Italy, Austria, Estonia, Spain and Romania. Nobel laureates like Paul Crutzens and Bert Sakman would also grace the occasion.
