NEW DELHI: With the 12th consecutive successful flight of the supersonic BrahMos missile in the deserts of Rajasthan, and the Indian Army geared up to induct it, the Indo-Russian joint venture, BrahMos Aerospace is all geared to manufacture the air version in the next five years. Dr. Sivathanu Pillai, CEO and MD of BrahMos Aerospace said, “The design and feasibility to incorporate the missile in the Russian built Sukhoi aircraft has been completed and by end of 2007 it will be ready for flight tests.” The venture involving laboratories from both countries has an investment of $250 million from each country since its initiation in 1998 and is anticipating a production order beyond $2.5 billion by 2007 with the increasing potential of the missile market. The Indian private sector has invested in setting up production facilities and has established high quality and lucrative production facilities to match the company’s necessities. Dr. Pillai also stated that the company is gearing up to enhance the BrahMos missiles by making it more versatile to stay ahead of competition. The naval Chief stated that the missile, which has been inducted into the Indian Navy from the beginning, would feature in all the future ships built in India. The cruise missile that can be launched from multiple platforms like ship, road, mobile launcher, submarine and air would also be fitted into three Talwar class ships built in Russia and would also be promoted by the Russian government for their armed forces as well.
