Engineering major Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL) has bagged a 225 million order to replace an imported steam turbine generator (STG) at the Rourkela Steel Plant with an indigenous set.

NEW DELHI: "Outbidding European multinational equipment suppliers, BHEL has won an order for a 25 MW STG set," said a company statement Wednesday. "Valued at 225 million, the STG set will be manufactured and supplied by the company's Hyderabad plant and the unit will be commissioned by BHEL in a tight schedule of 22 months." The STG is expected to augment captive power generation. State-owned BHEL, which specialises in the manufacture and commissioning of power equipment, had earlier replaced two imported steam turbine sets with a capacity of 25 MW each at the same power plant of Rourkela Steel in Orissa. A major producer of a diversified range of sophisticated steel products, Rourkela Steel is an integral part of the state-owned Steel Authority of India Limited. It was set up in the 1950s with German collaboration. The renovation and modernisation order envisages installation of the new STG set with associated auxiliaries after dismantling the existing set. BHEL will also replace the old condenser, generator, piping system, electricals and controls.
