New York: Good looks and a winning smile count for more than they ought to when it comes to decide who should earn the top-notch salary. Good-looking women and men earn 4 to 5 percent more money than their less attractive coworkers and get more attention from their bosses, reveals a study. In a survey of corporate hiring managers launched by Newsweek, it is found that more than half of the respondents recommended that prospective employees devote as much time and money on "making sure they look attractive" as on polishing their resumes. Managers also put more emphasis on looks than education. When asked to rank factors that come into play when evaluating a candidate, appearance came in third, below experience (No. 1) and confidence (No. 2) but was more significant than where an applicant went to college (which came in at No. 4). Around 61 percent of the managers surveyed, who were mostly men, said that they believe it would be advantageous for women to wear clothing that showed off their figures. Now, as the country struggles to recover from the recession, job-hunters may find themselves battling the beauty bias even more than before.
