App to SOPA

Bangalore: Do you want your website to reflect your views regarding legislation of SOPA/PIPA or do you wish to make your website dark on ‘Blackout Day’? Here is an app which lets you do so.

CloudFlare, a web security firm had released an app which helps the website owners to join the Anti SOPA bandwagon and increase the visitors awareness about SOPA and PIPA.

The ‘CloudFlare Stop Censorship App’ can be downloaded from the CloudFlare App marketplace. Upon installing the app, the visitors who enter the website will be welcomed with a completely censored view of pages. The words having more than 5 characters will be will be blacked out. A “censored” corner badge will appear on the top of the page.

Clicking any of the blacked out word will open a new window which explains the user how United States legislation under consideration threatens the freedom. Users are given the option to ‘tweet’ their opinion about the censorship. Closing the page will bring website to original view but the “censored” badge remains on the top. The entire experience will be only for the first visit and the app promises not to impact the search engine optimization (SEO) of the website negatively.

According to Matthew Prince, CloudFlare founder, “we thought it was an effective way to reach mass audience and raise awareness about the dangers of a law like SOPA/PIPA.”

SOPA and PIPA threaten the existence of sites like Wikipedia, Youtube and Facebook which link to copyright infringing contents. So posting a copyright protected picture on your website can even lead to a complete shutdown of the site.

With more and more websites and blogs joining the “Blackout Day” along with Wikipedia, Scribd and Reddit on January 18, Prince plans to keep the app available for the entire month.
