Bangalore: If your earnings fall into the high income category, chances are that you spend a greater amount of time on internet. A new study by Pew Internet & American Life Project revealed that high income people spend significantly greater time using internet than their low income counterparts. The study results show that 95 percent of Americans living in homes with $75,000 or more income use internet at least occasionally. Internet usage in households having earnings less than $75,000 is 70 percent. Jim Jansen, senior Pew fellow and main author of report said, "Those who are better off financially capitalize on many of the tools that define Internet use. These higher-income Americans use the Internet in higher numbers and greater frequency than their less well-off peers." The findings also disclosed that of the higher income group, 93 percent of them have high-speed Internet access such as DSL or a cable modem. Almost whole of the higher income group (99 percent) uses internet in the confines of their homes, about 93 percent of lower income group do so. Of the higher income group, 93 percent use email. But majority of people in both the groups look for news and pay their bills online. It was also found that high income group people are also likely to own more gadgets. 79 percent people in the group own desktops and laptops. They are also most likely to own MP3 players, tablets and e-readers. About nine percent of higher income group own tablet computers as compared to just three percent in the lower income group. Jansen said, "The correlation between higher income and increased Internet usage was consistent for nearly every online activity and technology. Income was a significant factor, even when accounting for other attributes such as age, education, race, gender, and community type."
