Adobe Systems Inc., a U.S.-based publishing software maker, Tuesday said it plans to invest up to $50 million over a period of five years in India to expand infrastructure and research and development activities.

New Delhi: The expansion will make Adobe Systems India the second largest facility, after San Jose, said Shantanu Narayen, vice president (worldwide products) of Adobe Systems, while unveiling the company's facility at Noida, near New Delhi. Set up with an investment of $10 million, Adobe's state-of-the-art facility at Noida has the capacity to accommodate 370 software engineers. The company employs 140 engineers in India and plans to increase the number in few years. "At a time when many technology companies are cutting back on their research and development spending, R&D remains an important area of investment for Adobe," Narayen said. "The Adobe team in India plays a critical role in the development of many award winning products and we expect it to play a significant role in the future." Adobe established its India operations in January 1998. The Indian operation of the company is responsible for development of key products like PageMaker and the Acrobat Readers for mobile devices. "Our rate of progress is marked by the increasing amount of high quality products and technologies developed here for Adobe customers worldwide," said Naresh Gupta, managing director of Adobe India. Adobe is also keen to help the Indian operations emerge as the hub for services and product support, besides shifting the back office and business process work of Adobe worldwide to India.
