3. Abbott Labs
Settlement: $1.5 billion

Abbott Laboratories had to pay $1.5 billion to the U.S. government after being accused of marketing anti-seizure drug Depakote for uses that were not allowed by FDA (Food and Drug Administration).

Abbott Labs was asked to pay a criminal fine in the amount of $500 million with an added forfeiture of $198.5 million along with $1.5 million to the Virginia Medicaid Fraud Control Unit. The company was also put on probation of five years. 

4. Eli Lilly
Settlement: $1.4 billion

The company was found guilty for marketing the drug called Zyprexa as a remedy for dementia, though it had been approved for treating schizophrenia and bipolar disorders by the FDA.  In January 2009, the largest criminal fine in U.S. history, totaling $1.415 billion was imposed on Lilly for illegal marketing of its best-selling product, the atypical antipsychotic medication, Zyprexa.
