At 22, Patna boy becomes youngest IIT Professor
By   SINS
Tuesday, 13 July 2010, 19:43 Hrs

Mumbai: Dr. Tathagat Avatar Tulsi, a Patna-born child prodigy, becomes the youngest professor at Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay at the age of 22. He is set to join as an assistant professor in the Department of Physics from next week.

He had completed his high school at the age of nine, earned his BSc degree at 10 and M.Sc at the age of 12. At the age of 21, Tulsi completed his doctorate in Quantum Computing from Indian Institute of Science.

The young professor, who has never studied in a classroom, plans to ask his students how they would want to be taught. "I have never taught in a class. But I believe I can come down to the level of a student and help them understand the subject," he said. When asked about his future plans, he said "I want to pursue my research and at IIT-B, I will have the leisure to continue my research and one day set up a lab focused on quantum computation in our country."

Dr. Tulsi had to turn down offers from Waterloo University in Canada and the Indian Institute of Science Education & Research (IISER), Bhopal to come and teach at IIT-B.

In 2003, the prestigious Time magazine named him among the world's seven most gifted youngsters, though he went into a shell after an international delegation called him a fake prodigy in 2001. Tulsi said he is going to write to the Limca Book of Records to include him as the youngest faculty member in the country.

1: Congratulations to Dr. Tulsi . Really, he made all of us proud.

Meanwhile, I would like to put a small comment on this ongoing Bihar vs Maharashtra debate in this article. I think whosoever is indulging in this debate is fulfilling the purpose of leaders like Raj Thakre, whether they are from Bihar, Maharashtra, Andhra or any other place. We need to be aware of these tactics played by politicians. They only know how to divide. Its our responsibility to get united as Indians otherwise we would be serving their purpose only.

Siddharth

3: Thank god, this happened. Otherwise the world would still believe an institution makes a genius. A genius is in each one of us. Everyone has a talent. Education is supposed to help finding it.
But education in today's day is a systematic process of only looking for 2 types of talents-Mathematical/ scientific and second is language talent.
Imagine the number of sachins or rehmans or aamirs we would have missed out over 60 yrs of independence because of the education system.
Beleive in urself and follow ur dreams. The more u think logical and practical, the more u propagate mediocrity and failure eventually.

11: Dear Editor
I have read about Dr Tulasi there are some hard facts and truths that poeple should learn
1.Dr Tulasi was accused being a Fraud by his fellow peers when he was sent on trip to Germany by (Department of Science Technology)
2.He probably went into a shell after that (as per the article above)
3.Now he has proved it that he got stuff ,he was with father of quantum physics on a trip to USA (Los almos national labaratory).
Now poeple are senting congrats and giving advice not to boast about Bihar where are these poeple when continous profile on the lines of Lalu bihar is uttered ?may be it is time we Indians also learn some lessons :
come to a conclusion
1Harass others like a phsycho
2Wait for the facts and most importantly wait a bit longer as things become apparent and clearer that is never see 3people through a smoked glass and mirror
4.God also says the same seek truth not half baked truths and misconcieved judgements

Tulasi has bounced back in life as he has had his family support what will happen if someone is in his place who is more vulnerable without support ? that is the question ?
I have experienced it and continue to experience it ..
It should be a good lesson and slap on the face for those who discrimnate others.
There was a roommate(Indian) I had in australia while I was applying for jobs and trying to get a job he said Godess Sarswathi is kicking me while iam trying to get near her .
so that is the attitude and you pray to god everyday for yourself even god does not want you either he will kick you back as well
this should server as a good slap on the face for such people .Also all the people posting about poeple getting into IIT-JEE not brilliant etc I think it shows your insecurity as Indian society for years together only the few got in but the order is changing and that makes others inseure and jealous (also god will never like such kind of poeple)

12: Hi Sahil and others
Yes it is Talent all the way .
I mentioned below about Dr Sanjay K Jha and quoted his salary(source wikipedia) to demonstrate the point that
with sheer education and Talent he has earned his salary unlike producing some fancy movie or something like it.
Moreover it is a fine example and it is in the context and spirit as it will encourage others to study hard and tells that hope is still alive.
Iam not boasting I live in Sydney Australia Iam not from Bihar but from Andhra Pradesh I have had friends from Bihar while doing my B.E at Madras and they were my best friends and have seen them solving problems and helping others .so I know what Iam talking about. Also in australia while at a workplace(Comm bank) someone there (marathi manu) made some remarks which were not good particularly about Bihar and UP Iam sure that person reading this comment knows the truth ,that too he asked me to come for a walk in the park(sydney city) and made those commnets exactly after those comments some incidents did take place in mumbai and if you followed news you know what iam talking about? Also it is the same prejuidice that has destroyed my career for last 2 years they too(some Indians) said lots of nasty things like iam google ,my knowledege is bookish etc etc i could not get a job and iam homeless now just surving (I have B.E from India and M.TECH Univ Of Tasmania Australia).I have spent entire property a peiece of land that I had in India and came to australia to study (Masters )
I have also lost a friend from Andhra Pradesh called Danujaya Rodda (suicide) which happened right after a trip he went to on weekend with Indians(Punjab sikhs) He was on Australian Govt Scholarship to study B.E computer science in australia and also on Indian Govt Scholarship ..He scored all distinctions and 100 perecent in MATHEMATICS in B.E first three semesters ..
So I know what Iam talking about ..It is not boasting it is a point that I wanto make that at one time they did have rich history and they do have talent and with better resources becoming available there will be many more such people discovered
And 100 perecnt I stick to my comments becuase that is 200 percent truth

They are linking Lalu and Bihar with this gentleman ..
I just want to ask a question the article says he has done his PHD at Indian Institute oF SCience as far as I know it is in Bangalore city(Karnataka state) and I have visited its campus once years ago ,it is Indias premier research and academic institution with very eminent faculty ,so if IISC has awarded him PHD in quantum Physics that itself verifies Tulasis credentials No need to add spice and jealous comments
For all the people out there Bihar is a powerhouse of very intelligent people whether it is Sanjay Jha(Motorola CEO highest paid cHICAGO uSA) ,pRAKASH jHA .Also Microsoft has some very bright Biharis (origin or roots) If you want I will publish the names in the comment ..so appluad or sit quite

Also IIT-B will not just induct people into the faculty he will be screened by the fellow faculty and also asked to take a trail class ,the audience will be fellow faculty (atleast that is what happened when a new teacher joined our school) ... so defintely I feel he has stuff

If there would have been methods by which sm1 could pass a class just by giving the exam at anytime they want then a lot of people would have become Dr at much less age than 22. but speed always hampers.I m damn sure he is not as fast as an IITian doing a B-Tech there. he is going to face huge problems while taking the classes. wel best of luck!

Spelling and grammar just forget It is not that I don't know. When you read after typing, you see that 'are' is not there and 'is' missing, etc. There is not time to think when ideas flows and Indian values fills all of our very soul. Of course as one of my Indian brother (also Internationals also my brothers) said "this is not an exam. if you are good in grammar and spelling.. just read it as you know correctly. That is the real content, if I could have put it and checked in the MS word. We don't have time for all those. Inspiration and devotion comes instantly. it can not be cooked.
Thanks,
Sincerely,

You life is an evidence of how past karma accumulated in the last many births made you so divine and genius which not normal. it will give all people around the world to have confidence on the basis of Indian valuse and their enormous faith on Karma. You get what you have given to your life, that is Karma.
Now you are reaping your own goodness of many past births. Read Swami Vivekananda's philosophy and make your life more glorious and your aim willbe fulfilled to build a World Class Instituion in India on Quantum Computation. Also read "An Autobiography os a Yogi" written by Sri Paramhansa Yogananda who (I think) born and lived in His youth in Patna or Ranchi, who established Yogada Satsang Society and afterwards made His life and of 30 years and YSS in Encinitas in California in US.
I will be joining to strengthen your aim to get fulfilled, either by money (if I had more than my food!) and also by all moral and even direct consultation with you.
I wish to eet and discuss more when I come from Ethiopia to Mumbai in July second week.
I am also an Assistant Professor in geology in Mekelle University, Mekelle.

If at all you would like to accept there is only one unverifiable Theory of Karma explanation for it. prodigies are not produced by any school or system or method of education however great. They are just a freak of Nature to use a popular phrase. I only wish Dr.Tulsi well and pray that his progress is not scuttled by our bureaucratic ways. That he is able to achieve what hw set out to in his last lifetime!

157: This is the age of high ambition and fierce competition. Dr. Tathagat has achieved something which he owes himself and I salute him from the core of my heart. Wish some more of us can emulate similar achievements. But how much of this credit can we give to Bihar. A big Zero. Other than spreading hatred on the lines on caste and taking back the state to barbaric age, this state administration has done virtually Nothing. Students of Bihar are coming up in all spheres of life strictly due to their own merit. Before we talk about Biharis gradually moving to top, let us pray that at least Bihar as a state be at par with its peers like Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, etc on Industrial development, Employment, Literacy, etc. There is no dearth of talent in Bihar nor is there scarcity of resources. What is seriously lacking is the conviction of the petty Politicians in Bihar ? Hope, I can only hope, things will be better in Bihar and we'll find Dr. Tathagat proudly taking up similar assignment in his home state, people of which needs his guidance / service much more than others.
