Divorce lawyers claim that the explosion in the popularity of websites such as Facebook and Bebo is tempting to people to cheat on their partners. One law firm, which specializes in divorce, claimed almost one in five petitions they processed cited Facebook.
Suspicious spouses have also used the websites to find evidence of flirting and even affairs which have led to divorce. Mark Keenan, Managing Director of Divorce-Online said, "I had heard from my staff that there were a lot of people saying they had found out things about their partners on Facebook and I decided to see how prevalent it was I was really surprised to see 20 percent of all the petitions containing references to Facebook. The most common reason seemed to be people having inappropriate sexual chats with people they were not supposed to."
Flirty emails and messages found on Facebook pages are increasingly being cited as evidence of unreasonable behaviour. In fact, computer firms have even cashed in by developing software allowing suspicious spouses to electronically spy on someone's online activities.
One 35-year-old woman even discovered her husband was divorcing her via Facebook. Conference organiser Emma Brady was distraught to read that her marriage was over when he updated his status on the site to read: "Neil Brady has ended his marriage to Emma Brady."
Around 14 million Britons are believed to regularly use social networking sites to communicate with old friends or make new ones. The popularity of the Friends Reunited website several years ago was also blamed for a surge in divorces as bored husbands and wives used it to contact old flames and first loves.

I dont agree with this.Years before facebook came into existence the divorce rate were somewhat the same itself,the only thing was that the reason was something else...We cant blame any online communities or sites for any such issues.Ofcoz people dont need facebook to do all these craps..worser sites were available on net for these purposes.The only thing is that in facebook and orkut one can find out the profile and contacts of the other....

Nowadays divorced cases are increasing day to day. Its only reason we think only our pleasure, needs, ego,thoughts, trust & believeness, we don't want to think others, neither for husband or wife nor our family members. Husband & wife make together a family & family is need of our society, need of our security & for need of the world's reproduction. It is not only my personal enjoyment but it is our duty for smooth running our society.When we will begin to think for others requirment & feelings, we will get real satisfactions & enjoyment as nobody is perfect in itself & the thinking of devorce will be obsolete.

I just have one message for all those so called divorcees and the ones who are planning to get divorced...is marriage a puppet show...does it mean ending that divine relationship (as it should be truly considered) with just spying on each other...i think it is much beyond that...LOVE should rule this relationship and not DOUBT. Can I assume the "Telegraph" is in England? Here in the USA those who are close to the church suggest that anything at all that allows a married person to speak to someone other than their mate and relatives is called "cheating". Perhaps the word "cheating" in the church rules needs to be explained better to their congregation. In this age of technology where females do speak with and work with males and visa versa and there is an attempt for equality in pay and such and more females are in higher places than ever before, then naturally there will be this give and take in conversation, as long as it isn't misconstrued, isn't taken farther than just business chat then it should not be taken by the partner as cheating. So I'd say the "misintrepretation of the word cheating" is what's causing the divorces and the non-ability to communicate along with tough economic times and ecological things occurring and family matters are the cause of most divorces, and not merely Facebook, which is a means of communicating and networking.
